The Youth MHFA action plan follows the same structure as the MHFA action plan but is tailored to the needs of young people. Key differences include:
- Safeguarding: Safeguarding is a priority in every action, especially for younger children
- Approaching and assessing: Before approaching a young person, it’s important to assess their basic needs and approach them with sensitivity
- Information and support: Youth MHFAiders must be aware of how young people receive mental health information, including the impact of social media
- Signposting to professional help: Guiding young people is more hands-on, as they may require additional help navigating mental health services
- Internal signposting: Youth MHFAiders should be aware of key contacts within their setting for handing over or referring young people if needed
Additionally, the Youth MHFA action plan includes guidance on supporting marginalised groups, such as Deaf young people and those from racially marginalised backgrounds.
